Keyword Research
What is keyword
research?
Perhaps it's best to first
clarify exactly what a keyword is: Keywords are simply words or
strings of words that consumers are using to find the products
or services that you offer. When someone types a series of
words into the Google (or any search engine's) search bar,
those words are the "keywords."
Keyword research is vitally
important in determining the ideal keywords to optimize on your
site. In essence it's the blended art and science of balancing
the popularity of a keyword or search phrase against the
competitiveness of that same word or phrase.
Why is keyword research
important?
- Identifies
the specific keywords potential customers are using to
search for the goods and services your site provides
(not just what you think they are
searching for
-
Saves time by determining the
best keywords to optimize on your site up front
so that the entire site can be developed to optimize
the identified keywords the first time
around
-
Prevents wasted money from
optimizing the wrong keywords on your site and not
getting optimal results
Who
benefits from keyword
research?
-
Anyone with an existing website that is not ranking
well in the search engines
-
Anyone wishing to know the most common keywords their
potential customers are using to search
for them
- Anyone
who wants to know which keywords have the greatest
optimization potential (i.e. not just highest demand, but
also the best competitive edge)
What else
should I know about keyword research?
Ideally,
keyword research is done at the very front end of the site
concept and development process. Using that keyword
knowledge, the site can then be developed using
those keywords, giving you the greatest
potential for your site to be found
online.
Obviously, no
one wants to spend time and money targeting keywords that
very few people are using to search. On the flip side, if 100
million results come up when a particular keyword is searched,
it will likely be very difficult to achieve a high organic
search result. That's why it's important to not only identify
popular keywords, but to look at the competitive situation for
those words as well. Only then can keywords be identified that
have the best potential to achieve high organic search results
if optimized well.
If your site is already
functioning but your results aren't what you had hoped, you can
still benefit from keyword research and make adjustments to
your site to leverage that learning.
What is included in keyword
research?

potential
