Mobile Marketing

What is mobile marketing?

Mobile marketing involves getting your marketing messages out to users of mobile phones and mobile devices such as iPads.

Trending for mobile marketing is huge! Just look at some of these mobile marketing facts and you'll see why mobile marketing will be the next big wave in online marketing.

  • Mobile internet use is up 5,000% percent in the past 3 years. - CNN Tech
  • Mobile internet access will surpass desktop internet access by 2015 - Morgan Stanley
  • The actual purchase intent of mobile searchers is at least 3 times higher than for traditional online searchers - Dan Holllings, Mobile Expert

There are three main categories of mobile marketing. The three types include:

  • Text Marketing -- Similar to email marketing, but text based messages. We're not spamming text messages here, but rather, this is permission based marketing where messages are sent only to those who request communication in this manner -- a trend that is rising rapidly!
  • Mobile Websites -- Mobile websites are sites specially developed to be easily read on small mobile devices. These are NOT simply copied versions of regular websites that then appear much smaller on a mobile phone.

Mobile websites are much simpler than regular websites, generally containing just the information to be most likely sought by someone searching with a mobile devise. For this reason, mobile websites are generally developed independently from regular sites and use distinct technology to ensure that they are 100% compliant to W3C Mobile Web Standards.
  • QR Codes -- QR codes are 2 dimentional bar codes that can be used in a variety of creative marketing ways. (See this Fast Company article to see a number of creative uses for QR codes -- it will get your creative juices flowing!) Basically, QR codes can be "read" by smart phones. With a compatable QR app for your particular smart phone, your phone may be able to read the QR code by either scanning or snapping a photo of it. Once completed, the QR code leads the consumer to a webpage or online activity of some type (video, etc.) There are truly a wide variety of potential uses -- read that article!

See an example of a QR code below. Then, start looking for QR codes everywhere you go. (And if you have a smart phone, download a QR code app and start trying them out!)
