A website might temporarily achieve a high position only to find it suddenly get penalized and end up buried hundreds of pages deep in the search results. Some tactics can even get your website banned from the engines completely.

Q: Someone told me to avoid companies that use "black hat" SEO techniques. What is "black hat?"

A: You received good advice. Black hat SEO techniques are risky tactics that use sneaky, unethical, or prohibited ways of trying to achieve high positions in the search engines. It is very important that you work with companies that only use "white hat" SEO techniques.

Q: How long will I have to wait to get top search engine results in search engines like Google?

A: It depends. There are many factors that contribute to how quickly your site might attain high organic search rankings. If the keywords you are optimizing are highly competitive, it could take a considerable amount of time.  Keywords that aren't highly competitive can sometimes achieve high results fairly quickly by optimizing your website pages.

For more competitive terms, it will take much more effort. Typically it requires developing back links and off-site SEO efforts that can take a good deal of time to develop. Ultimately, the length of time it takes will depend on how competitive the keywords are and how aggressively you want us to work toward getting higher positions for your site.

Q: I've heard that I can buy links or do coordinated link exchanges to get a lot of links quickly which will help me in the search engines. Is this true?

A: These kinds of link building strategies are risky. The search engines are very sophisticated and they can detect when links get pointed to sites en masse. This raises a red flag and it can cause your site to get penalized. Instead of gaining ground in the engines, this tactic could well work against you and actually cause you to lose ground instead.
